Top 8 Tips to Stay Hydrated

It was always hard for me to stay hydrated, especially during those hot summer days when the day just passes, you get a mild headache and realise that you only had one or two glasses of water for the entire day.

There are number of effects of dehydration which include low blood pressure, muscle cramps, nausea and vomiting, kidney failure, and many more. And one thing to mention that is highly important and I cannot stress it enough, once you are thirsty you are already dehydrated. In order to improve my ability to stay hydrated I decided to do an extended research and thus change my entire lifestyle if it’s necessary to solve this problem. So here I share what I have managed to find out on how to stay hydrated.

Drink Infused Water

You can get tired when drinking water alone. Also, for me there are plenty of occasions when I prefer drinking something with a flavour, and I believe there is no better substitute than this. Glass of juice can probably do more harm than good in this case and you should rather take your favourite flavour of infused water.

Fresh Lime Water

Nowadays you can find a whole variety of tastes that you will certainly love.

Make hydration a habit

First thing in the morning, every morning, I take around 400ml of water. Somehow I do try to do it without even being aware of it as a commitment I have to do right after I wake up.

Other occasions when you can schedule drinking water is before every meal, after shower and prior to going bed. Once your daily intake of water is scheduled like this you will have your recommended daily intake without even noticing. Moreover, you won’t feel the thirst at all.

Get a bigger water bottle

Ok, I understand. You are sitting next to your computer or watching TV and you know it’s the time for your water intake, but who will get up now just to refill the glass or the bottle. What you can do, at least when you are at home is take on of those 1.5l water. While they are bit bigger they aren’t too big and when I am spending most of the day at one place I do it like this. Water is right over there and you just need to drink it.

Cut down on caffeine

Most of us drink at least one cup of coffee per day. However I used to go for 3 or more cups per day when I have long days at work. This, didn’t helped me at all to stay hydrated as caffeine is a diuretic and it causes you to lose even more water than what you normally do. If you feel like you are not up to filling you bottle every once in a while place the coffee somewhere last on this list what you would like to drink. During the summer time I only drink 1 cup of coffee in the morning and I am good for the rest of the day.

Gamify it

This one can be linked with the method of tracking process of losing weight with jar and stones. The same way there are many cool ideas for making drinking water fun. For instance, you can put the rubber bands on the bottle in the amount of times you need to refill the bottle. Once you refill it place the rubber band on your wrist.

You can do similar with writing the motivational quotes on sticky notes. The same way like the previous game, write down motivational quotes matching to number of times you need to refill the bottle. Each time you refill take on sticky note.

Set your hydration goals and mark them on the bottle in order to remind you.

Use calendar reminder

Smart phones have made many things available to us through the app store. You can use the calendar to make a reminder throughout the day on when to drink desired amount of water.

You can also check the app store for the cool apps that can do this work for you. In many of them you can set your goals and it will show you on when and how to drink your water.

Get a drinking buddy

Well this tip might be misunderstood. It’s not the type of drinking buddy that will make you dehydrated. Try to find someone who will share the idea of trying to stay hydrated and share your goals and milestones with each other. This way you can also motivate yourself to keep up and not disappoint the other side.

I am sure there is someone among your friends that will be interested in this type of healthy “competition”.

Eat water-filled foods

I truly believe this one is one of the most important tips here. There is a whole variety of food that are filled with water and those can sometimes be even a substitute for water. Starting from watermelon, grapefruit, strawberries, cucumber and the list goes on and on. Try to plan your diet in order to include these foods and you will also help your goal of staying hydrated.
